Kosheen’s quixotic attempt to become a dance act capable of cutting the live
mustard almost worked last time around, even if the Bristol trio weren’t quite
the performance specialists they seemed to think they were.
Their second
album (named, allegedly, after some American Indian fertility symbol) takes time
to yield its charms, but it is still a step forward. Gone are the drum'n'bass
twiddles, big grooves and neon torch songs; in come guitars, Garbage-like
mechanical soundscapes and litanies of excess and alienation. Sian Evans has a
proper dance diva’s voice –all deep, important and vulnerable – especially on
the outstanding "Ages", while Markee Substance and Darren Decoder belie
their idiotic noms-de-dance with the sort of substantial keyboard work that
Depeche Mode once revelled in.
The dark synths and intriguing rhythms of
Markee and Darren are first rate. The layered vocals of Sian are probably more
emotive than before, shown off better by the slower pace that defines this
second opus. "Unfinished Sympathy" may have been Massive Attack's epiphany, and
although there isn't that superb class here, there are similarities. A warbling
vocal over a tip-top production, but these two ingredients are quite distinct
and stick together more listlessly with varying degrees of success. Although not
entirely guitar driven, don't expect big club numbers either.
"All In
My Head" a nearly satisfying first single, and although not the strongest
song on the album, is still indicative of what "Kokopelli" is all about.
"Avalanche" is the first track with real latent power.
"Suzy
May" also a good example of the guitar-meets-electronica blend that Kosheen
are playing with. After that it gets better and more confident.
"Wish" chugs along perfectly.
Then the more guitar-ey and
particularly fine "Coming Home".
"Ages" just as good,
"Recovery" more slow and dark.
Conversely, "Blue Eyed Boy"
grates a little and "Crawling" doesn’t really go anywhere, despite trying
really hard.
There is an attractive immediacy to the album, you're only
likely to warm to the complete coolness of it by the final few tracks, the
second half of the CD being more reassuringly complex and moody than the first.
It's not quite an album for the all-out pop brigade, nor the ambient or club
crowd. But maybe that sporadic mix of words and music is almost the appeal of
Kosheen itself. This is another "difficult" second album, and although not a bad
one, still leaves a few promises unkept and potential untapped. A little more
personality and they will be set fair.
