Σε δήλωση του στην εφημερίδα Guardian, o αδερφός του Alan είπε πως: "He died peacefully at home. There will be a private family funeral in the next few days." ενώ οι Pink Floyd κυκλοφόρησαν το εξής ως απάντηση στην είδηση του θανάτου: "The band are naturally very upset and sad to learn of Syd Barrett's death. Syd was the guiding light of the early band line-up and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire.". Πολλά έχουν γραφτεί για την ιδιάζουσα περίπτωση του Roger Keith Barrett, για την επίδραση του σε ανθρώπους όπως ο Βowie, o Eno, ο Page κ.α, για την μουσική του ιδιοφυία, για την ψυχολογική του κατάσταση, για τα ναρκωτικά, κυρίως όμως αυτό:" Shine on You crazy Diamond"
